The cult credentials of Bruce Campbell’s latest self-directed offering are undoubtedly assured, what with Campbell playing a fictionalised version of himself – a booze-sodden B-movie actor with an inflated idea of his own talents and nothing but contempt for his loyal fans. While all this is mildly amusing, Bruce’s self-mocking portrayal lacks the bite of, say, Bill Murray’s curmudegeonly TV reporter in Groundhog Day, even though we know he is going to have to undergo a similar process of redemption – in this case by defeating an ancient Chinese demon which is terrorising the backwoods mining town of Gold Lick. While Bruce believes the whole thing is a prank – allowing him to poke fun at the local yokels – this time, it’s for real, and he must face up to his responsibilities. Full of in-jokes and movie references, My Name is Bruce is amiable fun, although a few beers and a sofa full of Campbell fans (who will lap up the second disc of extras) are probably required to get the most out of it.
