Zombies, fighting, an evil scientist and a near-naked heroine

A girl in a cowboy hat and fluffy bikini wielding a katana that has inexplicable magic powers probably makes perfect sense in the original video games; translated into live action, the concept acquires a distinct whiff of the ridiculous. Our heroine, who has all the film-carrying charisma you’d expect from such a complex character, is thrown together with a bunch of stereotypes nicked from a jumble of genres – fat cowardly sidekick, smokin’ biker babe, schoolgirl samurai, evil scientist, zombie hordes – who run around fighting each other until enough are killed to represent some kind of conclusion. At a guess, the film is pretty faithful to its source material, but is less involving when the director has the controller.
