One of those action movies where the story’s no more than a justificatory sticker, like a Page 3 speech bubble. The emphasis in this bad cops vs noble gangs sequel has shifted onto martial arts, away from the parkour which gave the original pace and identity; whilst the novelty of watching boys jump round estates might have faded, it’s still decidedly more remarkable than watching boys hit each other. As it is, Ultimatum is a pummelling, grinding, memory-wiping assault, like being repeatedly kicked in the head yourself. What’s more, the anger that fired director Pierre Morel’s original District 13, with its evident frustration at the problems and injustices of the banlieues, has gone, and in its place Ultimatum’s makers fall back on the tired bogeyman of a corrupt establishment to furnish their heroes with punching bags. Still, the action is insistent, and no one expects Page 3 speech bubbles to be profound.
