Fireball is a murderous cross between cage fighting and basketball, run by gangsters. Into the cage steps Tai, recently released from prison and pretending to be Tan, his twin brother, who's in a coma after taking a beating in a previous game. Tai seeks revenge - and the money to pay Tan's hospital fees - by fighting his way to the final where he'll meet Tan's psychopathic near-killer. And that's it for plot. It's a sexy, moody-looking film styled on Ong Bak (with irritating Red Bull product placement), and the fighting is suitably brutal. But however throwaway the storyline, a ridiculous action movie at least needs gear shifts and some variety to its action sequences; Fireball just grinds on, match after match, and the appeal of watching glowering muscley fighters grapple begins to pall. The twins are interchangeable, even to Tan's wife, and the ending just kicks the story into another cycle, making the whole affair seem extra pointless.
