A film about a lonely young woman with multiple sclerosis who goes on pilgrimages to escape her isolation might not sound like edge-of-the-seat stuff, but Jessica Hausner’s Lourdes manages to be deeply moving, wryly funny and utterly gripping. Probing the nature of faith, interrogating rather than decrying the miraculous and asking questions about God’s relationship with the world, Hausner’s script is beautifully nuanced and her direction tautly controlled, allowing the characters and situations to develop in a quiet, unforced way, while the performances – especially that of the captivating Sylvie Testud – are uniformly excellent. With a Bresson-like moral sense and a Tatie-esque eye for the social dynamics of groups, Lourdes is a minor miracle in itself.
