An oddity, even by Chan’s eclectic standards, this squarely-aimed-at-teenagers movie sees 16-year-old Zhang Yishan (who can only, generously, be described as special), running away from the grandparents who care for him, wandering around China, and looking for his idol. En route, he gets into some scrapes, most being too tedious to detail. Produced solely for the Chinese market, there’s little here to interest even the most devoted kung-fu fan, as it’s little more than an advertisement for the Chinese tourist board, while ‘Wor Jackie’ makes only two appearances, spouting platitudes like a Confucian/Communist Green Cross Code Man: “Respect your elders… cherish the young… stay in school.” He’s a worthy role model, but this film is basically just poor propaganda.
