It’s a shame that this documentary about John and Yoko’s 1969 bed-in protest may not be seen by anyone other than Fab-Four fans because it’s of genuine historical interest. Far removed from the hot air generated by Live Aid/Earth, we see our pyjama-clad heroes hold court to Allen Ginsberg, perma-gurning acid-guru Timothy Leary (then thinking of running for Governor of California), various Black Panthers, Yippies and, um… Petula Clark.
Both Lennon and Ono were expert at manipulating (various) media, and the anarchic-seeming, week-long bed-in was planned with military precision, with up to 500 journalists and broadcasters milling around the hotel lobby waiting to be granted one of the 200 interviews the couple gave in eight days. In one touching ‘off-camera’ moment, John cheekily slaps his new lover/muse murmuring, “Oh, you sexy bitch”, but this relaxed and playful mood is soon replaced by the never-ending round of Q&A and photos.
