Scary sheep. That apparent oxymoron is pretty much the only joke in this piece of Antipodean horror-comedy silliness – bar the odd fart and sheep-shagging gag.
A simple tale of carnivorous mutant livestock, the dialogue has none of the sharpness which elevated Shaun of the Dead so far above its genre (“the sheep are revolting” is about as sophisticated as it gets), and the sheep have more fully-realised personalities than the characters, but there’s plenty of gore and some fantastically grotesque, WETA Workshop-created effects.
This is unpretentious entertainment aimed squarely at what will no doubt be an appreciative demographic. Menacing-looking sheep are funny, but could have been even funnier if only they’d been supported by a decent script.
