Tekken 6 is the latest outing for the Tekken franchise, one which has its origins in the massively popular 1994 arcade game. Beat 'em up fans won't be disappointed. Anyone who has played a Tekken game before will know exactly what to expect from the latest instalment, and anyone who hasn't could probably hazard a decent guess.
The premise is simple: Take any one of the 42 available characters and kick and punch your way to victory in the King of the Iron Fist tournament. Like all such games, this one is best enjoyed when playing a human opponent, so having a few mates round to dish out the beatings to is far more satisfying then the single player mode; alternatively, you can go online and have it out against players from around the world.
Tekken 6 also sees the introduction of a campaign story mode, which, with its clunky gameplay and weak storyline, quite frankly looks as if it was knocked together in five minutes. It’s only worth playing if you want to collect money that you can use to purchase items for character customisation, such as a new outfit; otherwise, it’s a pretty pointless exercise.
While load times can be extremely frustrating, particularly when going online, this is still one of the finest fighting games around, with slick graphics and a massive selection of characters, all with different fighting styles – not to mention the Ghost Battles, Time Trial and Survival modes – offering much distraction and plenty of opportunities to gloat over your vanquished friends.
