Outsider art – made by those outside the mainstream and its tastes and fashions – has gained greater prominence in the UK in recent years, thanks in no small part to the Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham. The gallery has actively promoted the work of artists with mental and emotional issues, those who are self-taught or make naïve or folk art, and visionaries.
Eloquent Visions: Outsider and Visionary Art, is a collaboration between Orleans House Gallery and the Henry Boxer Gallery in Richmond, and will showcase a wide range of work by outsider artists, including the apocalyptic visions of Donald Pass, psychic drawings by Madge Gill, and schizophrenic watercolours painted by cat artist Louis Wain in the Napsbury asylum during the 1930s.
Eloquent Visions: Outsider and Visionary Art runs from 30 August till 19 October at the Orleans House Gallery, Riverside, Twickenham, TW1 3DJ. The gallery is open 1pm - 5.30pm Tuesdays to Saturday, and 2pm - 5.30pm on Sundays. Admission is free. Ring 020 8831 6000 or visit the Orleans House Gallery website for details
