The Grant Museum has announced its Spring programme of events, including the strangeness-celebrating talks, films and exhibitions listed below. For full details visit the museum's website.
Pandora's Box: Curiosity and the Dangerous Pursuit of Knowledge, which runs 15 February to 11 June (Mon-Fri, 1-5pm) is an exhibition of box assemblages and cabinets of curiosities by Amanda Schiff, with photographs by Jane Wildgoose. They're made from abandoned and forgotten objects and accompanied by short stories, mixing science with fairytale to tell of dark secrets and obsessions.
On 9 February, 6.30pm, there'll be a screening of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1916), introduced by Dr Joe Cain (UCL Science and Technology Studies). One of the original Hollywood sci-fi blockbusters, the film stunned its audiences when it opened with its special effects and underwater photography. The screening will be followed by a free glass of wine and a private view of the musem.
For those looking for a more cerebral way to spend Valentine's Day this year, Animal Magnetism (5.30pm 14 February) is a drinks reception amidst unusual exhibits, and promises answers to questions like which romantic human superstitions are animal-related, and how far creatures will go to get the girl. The event costs £3 on the door, and includes a glass of wine.
Humans riding on the backs of dinosaurs: A walk through the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky, is a pictorial tour of the Creation Museum, where dinosaurs play with children, creationist cosmology shows are shown in the planetarium, and a vegetarian Tyrannosaurus wanders round the Garden of Eden. It's presented by Dr John Troyer at 6.30pm on 4 March.
Grant Museum of Zoology, Darwin Building, University College London, Malet Place, WC1E 6BT. All events except Animal Magnetism are free and there is no need to book.
