Harry Price (b. 1881) was Britain's most famous ghost investigator; pictures of his experiments, which seemed to demonstrate psychic or otherworldly phenomena, played a crucial role in popularising the paranormal and in debates as to its 'reality' (for a discussion of his career and flamboyant personality see FT229). A selection of vintage photos from the Harry Price Library of Magical Literature – including pictures of the Borley Rectory Haunting, the Crawley Poltergeist and various spiritual mediums – are currently on display at The Photographers' Gallery.
The Harry Price pictures are being shown alongside the work of seven contemporary photographers who also explore the medium's capacity to suggest the supernatural. These images range from 'aura' portraits and ghostly faces to work investigating the power and energy of light and stereoscopic pictures examining susceptibility and delusion.
Seeing is Believing runs at The Photographers' Gallery, 5 & 8 Great Newport Street, London WC2H 7HY, till 27 January 2008. Admission is free.
